The James Ross Scholarship is an award presented this year to honor the legacy of James Ross Leonard. The scholarship was presented to Erin Givilancz – Clemens Girls Baseketball, at the Spring Football Game on May 21st. Erin will attend Texas A&M University.
James Ross Leonard coached the Samuel Clemens girls’ basketball team to the state finals in 1977. Although that was many years ago, his influence on decades of young women has continued. The scholarship was presented by his daughter Janice Leonard Fox and family, assistant coach Lynn Dodge and members of the 1977 State Finalist Clemens Basketball team. They wanted to honor him after all these years because of the influence he had in their lives. He was a positive role model for many young women. He was patient, kind, honest, and demanded the best from all he coached. He was able to inspire his players, and the work ethic he instilled in them has translated to their adult lives.
